This is the privacy policy for unsitting.com, the home of Unsitting’s writing on Unsitting. It explains what is collected, why, and how to change it.
Purposes
It is used to run the site, to improve what we publish by seeing which pages are read, to honour newsletter subscriptions, and to serve advertising where that is in place.
Partners and Providers
To publish at all we depend on third parties: hosting, analytics, email, and where applicable advertising. Each has its own privacy policy. Advertising and analytics vendors in particular act as independent controllers, so that policy — not this one — governs how they use what they collect.
Age Restrictions
This site is written for adults. It is not directed to children under 13 (or under 16 where local law sets that threshold), we do not knowingly collect data from them, and if we learn we have, we delete it.
Retention and Safeguards
Data lifespans are tied to purpose — analytics on the provider’s expiry schedule, email addresses until you leave the list, comments until they are taken down. Protection is by way of restricted access and encrypted transport, applied proportionately. No online service can be perfectly secure.
Cookie Use
Rather than duplicate it here, cookie detail lives in our Cookie Policy.
Where advertising is served, third-party vendors including Google may use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this and other websites. Google’s use of advertising cookies enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this site and/or other sites on the internet. You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or opt out of a third-party vendor’s use of cookies for personalised advertising at www.aboutads.info.
Information Received
Two kinds of information reach us. The first is automatic: standard server and analytics data such as IP address, approximate location, device and browser details, and which pages of unsitting.com were viewed. The second is whatever you deliberately hand over — a comment, a newsletter signup, or a message you send us. Worth saying outright, since it is the question we get asked: we ask readers not to send us sensitive personal details, and we delete rather than retain anything of that kind that reaches us unprompted.
Newsletter Handling
Mailing-list signup requires confirmation from the address given, which stops anyone subscribing you without your knowledge. Unsubscribe links and a postal address appear in every message, and we do not pass the list to anyone.
Your Choices
You have rights over your data, and which ones depend on where you are. Common to most: find out what is held, get it corrected, get it deleted, get a copy, push back on a particular use, and stop your data being sold or shared for ads. GDPR applies in the UK and EU; CCPA/CPRA and its equivalents apply across a growing list of US states. Global Privacy Control is honoured. More at State Privacy Notice and Do Not Sell or Share.
